Buy Home Checklist
Driveways and Walkways Provides Elegant Look

You need to check the exterior walls and complete surroundings of the home you plan to buy, while conducting exterior home checking. The driveways and walkways are the first things that any visitor to the home comes across. The condition of the driveway and walkways provide that elegant look to the home. The elegant flow of the driveway, accompanied by a walkway will compliment the home you intend to buy. You should ensure that your driveway and walkways are in excellent condition.

If the driveway or walkway is made from cement – or more correctly with concrete – ensure quality concrete is placed on a well prepared base, so that the surface can last for generations. Just as one would periodically check the home for maintenance, the driveway and the walkways also should be maintained on a regular basis. Home maintenance activities are, generally, seasonal. In summer, one may need to examine walkways and driveways for trip hazards, cracks and dips, and carry out repairs where necessary.

Widening the Driveway

Check to see whether the home you intend to buy requires widening of driveway or not. It is not such an extensive job. If the driveway needs widening, one needs to use the services of a professional. When widening the driveway, or the walkways, the color of the new concrete may not match with the color of the previously laid driveway and walkways.

First, the color of the concrete changes with age, and secondly, each batch of concrete has a slight variation in color due to the various ingredients that make up the concrete.

Repairing Cracks in the Concrete Driveways and Walkways

Over time, cracks may develop in the concrete surface of the driveways and walkways. This could be because of the stresses caused by the expansion and contraction of concrete due to heat and temperature changes. Tree roots are also known to have raised driveways and walkways, leading to appearance of cracks on the surface. Standing water can also cause cracks to appear on the concrete surface.

Cracks in concrete driveways usually form every 5 to 10 feet. That is why expansion joints are placed at 5-foot intervals. When the cracks eventually appear, they appear along these joints and not randomly. If cracks do appear at other places, they can be repaired.

DIY-ers find repairing cracks on the concrete surface of the driveways and walkways not difficult to handle. Otherwise, one can always call upon a professional to handle the job.
