Buy Home Checklist
Don’t Ignore Carpets, They Are Not As Soft As They Look!

Inspecting the carpets in the house you have short-listed to buy for interior home checking is a must do. It is even worthwhile at some point to get someone to do it professionally. Carpets in different areas of the house tend to collect allergenic material and mold. They get contaminated.

Interior Home Checking: Careful About Wall-to-Wall Carpeting

Be particularly wary about wall-to-wall carpeting because this is the sort that can be storage for hidden mold, fecal stains, bacteria, other allergens, etc. even though you might not actually be able to see them. That is what is so scary. Carpets that look visibly moldy must be discarded right away. You do not want to develop a health problem with years of hidden mold or smelly stuff.

Wet carpets as a result of water entering from the basement, a plumbing leak, leaking from the roof, sewer line backup, etc. need to be removed and disposed of. You can get someone to do this for you. If the carpet can be cleaned and reinstalled, you can get that done too. Carpets that become wet and are cleaned and dried within twenty-four or forty-eight hours may have a chance. If they have been wet for a while, there is no way they can be salvaged.

If carpets have been over wet padding because of moldy carpet tack strip, you might sometimes see rust spots or stains. The carpets in the basement should be inspected for dampness. Most professionals advise against using carpeting in the basement and other places most prone to damp. In fact, after the building dry out and clean up have been completed, they suggest installing a hard surface flooring, or alternatively paint the exposed concrete slab with epoxy paint. You can go a bit further and go for ceramic or vinyl tile work, which makes it better to maintain.

Interior Home Checking: What about carpets exposed to pets?

One of the worst things is a carpet exposed to a lot of pets. They retain a high level of animal dander. Depending on the level of dampness of the building, tend to retain mite feces and other dirty stuff. This is a problem for people who have respiratory troubles like asthma or wheezing. You need to check if there are urine stains - they can almost never be removed. Are there any discolorations - is the carpet faded? Does it have burn marks or tears? Check to see what kind of stain resistant material it is.

No matter how well a carpet is cleaned, it can never really become completely clean. At best, it can reduce the level of the particles on the topmost layer of the carpet temporarily!
